Community Partnership funding for Smart People: empowering people in local communities to benfit from ICT project. Re-locatable computer lab and bus, 20 networked workstations with internet connection, to provide free ICT training for adults in BOP. Digital storytelling is also included.

The first ten week block of the SmartPeople project has been completed. Both venues at Te Puke and Katikati were used and our association with local libraries ensured local communities were aware of the activity. A high level of satisfaction with the service has been expressed. As new modules become available and material becomes accessible online, it is expected that the number of people able to benefit from this project will increase steadily. To extend the project a number of options for sustainability are currently being investigated and are likely to centre on libraries.

Rotorua Community ICT Trust

The Rotorua District ICT Strategy 2006-2009 aims to improve Rotorua people’s use of communication technology. This initiative is a partnership of the Rotorua Community ICT Trust, Rotorua Social Services Council, Waiariki Institute of Technology and Rotorua District Council, with additional support provided from Lottery Community funding and the Rotorua Energy Charitable Trust.

Community Partnership funding was approved for the Rotorua E-Rider project and the E-Rider or ‘community IT advisor’ began work in October 2007. More than twenty IT assessments have so far been undertaken with Rotorua social service providers, as well as free computer support, computer refurbishing and installations. Workshops are also being run for social services to build their computer knowledge, skills and confidence. The project partners are currently looking into funding sources to extend the project beyond October 2008, subject to the results of an independent evaluation.
