Otago Museum

Community Partnership funding was given to the Otago Museum to develop interactive games targeted at 8 -14 year olds. The SciCity project aims to engage target groups in science and technology through ICT. It also hopes to encourage this group to learn about ICT systems through an online forum.

The SciCity project partners, Otago Museum, IBM NZ Ltd. and DYZNZ Ltd. are thrilled with the launch of their unique and innovative website. SciCity is a virtual environment where young New Zealanders can learn and explore, make movies of their discoveries, and earn virtual rewards.  Since the launch in July 2007, SciCity has proved to be a spectacular success, already gaining a high level of visitation and membership nationwide.

Otago Polytechnic

Otago Polytechnic received Community Partnership funding to Develop 3D games based on Maori history and stories. Training modules (games-based digital storytelling) will be established as part of the project.

The SimPā project is developing and testing a method for creating and using virtual environments to enhance learning of Māori narratives in the Kai Tahu and wider Maori community. SimPā will allow users to interact with histories and stories of local Kai Tahu places in a virtual environment. In 2006/7 the project worked with four Rūnaka, and in 2008 will expand to work with the remaining fifteen Kai Tahu Rūnaka before launching nationally. The resulting games will provide an interactive learning environment for use within each Papatipu Rūnaka. It is expected that this will enhance their mātauraka Māori, enable individuals to connect and have respect for their landscape and historical stories. Each game will be the intellectual property of each Papatipu Rūnaka and provide an indigenous tool for future development in education and Māori business.

OtagoNet

Video conferencing over broadband allows students and teachers to work with each other as though they are in the same room.  This means OtagoNet schools can offer students a wider range of subjects than they would otherwise. Teachers also hold discussions online instead of having to travel to professional meetings.
