The World Summit Award (WSA) in 2003, a NZ-focused and also significant event within the bigger umbrella of World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS), provided for the first time the opportunity to shift the focus from technology, networks and access issues to the actual applications, the resultant digital content and visibility.
The conceptual shift addressed in these awards for digital content to become available on a broader, more inclusive scale is timely and very much in line with New Zealand Government thinking and the New Zealand Digital Strategy.
The WSA is a global showcase of 40 outstanding projects, in eight categories, with a special emphasis on those which show the benefits of information and communication technology for the development of communities and society at large. Refer http://www.wsa-awards.org.nz/ for further detail.
This Year & beyond:
Not only is NZ participating in submitting 8 entrants we are planning an exciting showcase / exhibition at the NewDowse of the top 40 applications from around the World. Alongside the WSA Showcase we would include the NZ submissions, the New Zealand winners and Special Mentions from past years as well as a selection of NZ projects that will promote & give visibility to the NZ Digital & Content Strategies. This Showcase, early next year will co-incide with the International Festival, February ’08.
The NewDowse, an art museum with a major focus on new media & contemporary ideas will seek to engage with a broad cross-sector audience by showing new media practice outside the parameters of the ICT world. The philosophy of the WSA makes it the perfect vehicle to encourage and demonstrate digital content in the fullest sense. This is very much a first for NZ.
Submissions are sought in the above categories now!
