Community Partnership funding to extend the Computers in Homes scheme to over 500 families in rural and urban Gisborne areas with 10 schools.

One of the major benefits that school management and whanau are identifying with this project is the school community engagement that is occurring beyond school hours. Participating whanau feel more comfortable about being directly involved with their children’s education as they themselves take up learning again. The computer training sessions give them valuable ICT skills and have made them willing to assist with in- and out-of-class activities. Parents are commenting that the children are happy to see their mothers and fathers participating in their own learning.

Te Runanga o Ngati Porou

Community Partnership Fund approved Computers in Homes programme to 250 families in Wairoa with 15 schools and one Kohanga Reo on the East Coast.

Although the Ngati Porou Project is still very much in the early stage, the benefits to all who have graduated to date have been extremely pleasing. Parents who at the introductory hui were nervous and unsure have been replaced by parents brimming with excitement, proud to show off their work completed during training, eager for their computers to be installed so they can explore all the wonders of the internet and support their children’s learning. Whanau members are now more comfortable in the school learning environment and this is seen as a major benefit by school leaders.
