Broadband subscriber numbers jumped by nearly a third in the six months to 31 March 2006, bringing the total number of Internet subscribers in New Zealand to 1.3 million, Statistics New Zealand said today. Results from the Internet Service Provider Survey March 2006 also showed that the number of dial-up subscribers is beginning to decrease, falling almost 7 percent from 30 September 2005.

Results from the Internet Service Provider Survey September 2005 also showed there were 224,400 business and government subscribers. The total number of Internet subscribers in New Zealand was 1.24 million.

Releasing a discussion paper today on ICT safety and security issues, Mr Cunliffe said there was a need for greater awareness and the taking of new security measures by all participants in the information society. Faster broadband could bring $13 billion benefit

Increasing the speed of Broadband uptake in New Zealand could benefit the economy by $ 13.1 billion by 2030, according to a recent report released by IDC Market Research. The report, which was jointly sponsored by the Department of Trade and Enterprise, Microsoft and the New Zealand HiGrowth Project Trust, and included analysis from the Economist Intelligence unit, used macroeconomic data models to reach its conclusion. Another $15 million will be spent in the next financial year on 21 projects which will improve e-learning and foster innovative ideas in the tertiary sector Minister for Tertiary Education Michael Cullen announced today. “All of the projects are exciting, cutting-edge initiatives which will have a significant, positive impact on the delivery of tertiary education,” said Dr Cullen.
